In all guidebooks and pictures at the request of the name of the city appears the same sculpture. It depicts a pearl, which is conveniently located in the ajar half of the globe.
At night it is illuminated and mesmerizing, pointing the way to the center of Marmaris. It would seem - everything is clear with the city symbol. But it's not that simple. In fact, the city personifies the Seagull. It adorns the coat of arms of the municipality. As in any seaside town people here are quite superstitious. Sailors believe that to see a seagull in the port - to a successful voyage. Therefore, you can find a lot of images of this bird around the city.
Symbol of Marmaris
But if you suddenly go on a tour of the Aegean Islands from Marmaris, you did not see a seagull, do not worry. The beauty and pristineness of these islands will make the journey unforgettable.
Where did the pearl come from? The international competition organized by the European Tourism Union in Paris in 1985 involved 139 artists. The winner was Lutfi Kucyuk. He presented the city as the Pearl of the World - Marmaris. And he received his first honorary first for it.
That's why the city has since had two symbols: a pearl and a seagull. And each of them claims to be the main one.
